Gangtey Trek

This trek is in the beautiful glacial valley of Phobjikha under the Wangduephodrang district. It is also a natural habitat of the Black Necked Cranes. The village of Phobjikha is the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes, who migrate here annually from the Tibetan plateau. This moderate trek visits the villages of Gogona and Khotokha, passing through meadows and fields, then forests of juniper, magnolia, and rhododendrons in full bloom in April. It is one of the finest low-level treks in Bhutan. In Gogona, one can also visit the gouda cheese factory which was started with Swiss assistance and the dairy farm became a success story and a model farm for the rest of the country.

The best times for this trek are March to May, and September to November. For trekking in November – planning must take place 6 months in advance as it coincides with the Black-necked crane festival. The other best months are April and early May when the rhododendrons are in full bloom.
