The Bhutanese pride themselves on a sustainable approach to development in line with the philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Since the reign of HM Jigme Singye Wangchuck (1972 – 2006), the fourth King, Bhutan’s development is guided by the philosophy and values of GNH. His Majesty realized that western development strategies were not suitable for a small country like Bhutan.

Today development models stress on economic growth as the ultimate.objective of progress. The concept of GNH is based on the premise that true development of human society takes place when material and spiritual development occurs side by side.

Recently GNH received international recognition and interest continues to grow as to how Bhutan is a unique example of real human development.
